![]() Prayer - does it make a difference?
Author: Philip Yancey
Book Ref: BV 210.3 YAN
Why inform God of needs that God already knows about? Does God really care about the details of our lives, such as getting a house sold or finding a lost cat? How does God view my persistence in prayer? Does persistent prayer change God's intentions or does it change me?
If you have struggled (and who hasn't?) with such questions at some point in your walk with God, or if you just want some new perspectives on prayer, or hope to rejuvenate your prayer life, this book offers an honest, helpful and practical view of prayer that you may find both reassuring and motivational.
Yancey's own writings are interspersed with personal account from real people (some are leading Christian figures but many are simply ordinary people) about their prayer lives. Some of these testimonies are uplifting and positive, but some are honest accounts of struggles with less-than-perfect prayer lives, which I found comforting. Yancey encourages the reader to find (and commit to) a prayer routine that suits him and is realistic, yet imposes a discipline on the reader. He recognises that each person prays differently from another and that the same person may even pray in different ways at different times in his life.
There is a specific section on unanswered prayer, especially unanswered healing prayer, which deals with the dilemma sensitively and with a gentle insight.
Yancey dispenses practical advice on what to pray for and how to pray. This book was easy to read and well worth the time spent on it. | |
